The fourth annual Summer Jam Music & Arts Festival will take place from 11 a.m. – 7 p.m. this Saturday, July 8, at Westgate Park. The theme for this year’s festival is Moovin’ and Groovin’ and you’ll find local bands, artists, food trucks, craft artisans, and kids’ activities for everyone in the family! To coincide with that theme, festival organizers will be encouraging awareness of healthy movement and being active. Kids can even stop in the Heartland Hospitality Tent and pick up a water bottle to use while they’re out Moovin’ and Groovin’
This is the third year that the west-side festival has left a legacy of art in Westgate Park. As part of Summer Jam 2015, a 14’ stainless steel sculpture depicting the life stages of a monarch butterfly was installed at Westgate Park. “On the Wings of Change” was designed and constructed by Rachel Pace of Steeling Copper Metal Studio, LLC and can still be found near the enclosed shelter at Westgate Park. In 2016, Danielle Poling’s Fantastic Food Garden mural was created on the west facing wall of the racquetball court. In 2017, the organization is proud to debut Roger J. Williams’ Movin’ & Groovin’ mural along the newly paved Camp Chase Trail. It encompasses everything glorious about being active!
Kid’s activities are located next to the park’s new Tot Lot play structure and behind Westgate Recreation Center. Kids will find plenty to keep them busy all day with free face painting, a children’s art zone, monarch tent, sidewalk chalking, balloon twisting, and more. In addition, Summer Jam partners with Columbus Fire and Police departments to allow children to interact with the K-9 unit, pet the horses, sit in a police car and run through the Safe House.
Distinct and unique art, created by both emerging and established local artists, will be for sale under the art tent. Twenty eight craft artisans will also have booths and will be selling their own hand crafted products.
