An environmental equipment service, sales, parts and rental organization, Bell Equipment recently broke ground on their new Ohio headquarters in Gahanna. The business was founded in Michigan in 1951 by current owner James Bell, Jr.’s grandfather, Dorman Bell. “His original line was Elgin Sweeper, which he basically sold on the road from the trunk of his car, covering the lower peninsula of Michigan,” Bell said. With a consistent sales track record and very strong rapport with their customers, Bell Equipment quickly became recognized as the premier refuse truck and street sweeper supplier within the state of Michigan. From humble beginnings in Berkley, Michigan, the organization expanded to Detroit, then Troy, and finally settled on a 20,000 sf facility in Lake Orion, Michigan. Growth in the Ohio market facilitated a move to Mansfield in 2003 and Gahanna in 2012. The new Gahanna facility is 13,000 square feet and will currently house 10 employees.

Bell, the third generation owner, is pleased with the success of the business in central Ohio so far and cites the relationship with the City of Columbus as one of the reasons to expand here. “We relocated to Gahanna in 2012 to be centrally located for all of our Ohio based customers and to be geographically close to our largest Ohio municipal customer, the City of Columbus,” he said. In the future, Bell hopes to expand his business in Ohio by obtaining complimentary product lines and to continue our penetration throughout the state.

Bell Equipment represents over a dozen manufacturers and has thirty five full time employees. “As a distributor,” Bell said, “partnerships are critical. We rely on a win/win/win relationship for our customers, our dealership and our manufacturers. We all have a vested interest in each other’s success.”
