Overdraft Protection

What you need to know

An overdraft occurs when you do not have enough money in your account to cover a transaction, but we pay it anyway. Please note, however, that we cannot offer this protection on Health Savings (HSA) and/or business (non-personal) accounts.

We can cover your overdrafts in two different ways:

  • Overdraft Protection Service on your account.
  • We also offer overdraft protection plans, such as a link to a savings account, which may be less expensive than our standard overdraft practices. To learn more, contact us about these plans.

In order to receive Overdraft Protection for all items, you must affirmatively “opt-in” to authorize us to consider payment of overdraft(s) on your ATM and everyday debit card transaction(s). To “opt-in” to Overdraft Protection:

  • Complete the online form, or
  • You may also send a written request, including your name, address, date of request, and account number(s) to us at info@heartland.bank.

FAQs

What is Overdraft Protection and how does it apply to my account?
We do authorize and pay overdrafts for the following types of transactions: checks and other transactions made using your checking account number such as automatic bill payments.  We do not authorize and pay overdrafts for the following types of transactions unless you ask us to (see below):

  • ATM transactions
  • Everyday debit card transactions

We pay overdrafts at our discretion, which means we do not guarantee that we will always authorize and pay every type of transaction. If we do not authorize and pay an overdraft, your transaction will be declined.

What fees will I be charged if Heartland Bank pays my overdraft?
Under our Overdraft Protection Service program, we will charge you a fee of up to $35 each time we pay (or return) an overdraft, which will then lower your particular allowable dollar threshold. There will be a daily limit of $175 for total fees we can assess your account for overdrafts.
