North High Brewing Promotes Life

North High Brewing Promotes Life

“Two’s company and three’s a crowd” does not apply to brewing partners, Tim, Gavin and Jason. This dynamic trio melds into an industry force, admitting that it’s the small differences that sometimes have the most impact. It’s also how they view life and why they risked their “safe” careers to embark on a new journey – one that would keep them on their toes and in search of the meaning of Life.

Gavin Meyers and Tim Ward met in graduate school at The Ohio State University’s Fisher College of Business. Both in the entrepreneurship program with full-time day jobs, they gravitated toward each other, and soon there was talk of beer and brewing. And not just regular brewing…they wanted to allow the customer to be the brewmaster, thus providing a unique experience and a specialty product to share with friends and family.

As a result, in 2011, North High Brewing was established, and their first brewery and taproom opened in late 2012 at 1288 N High St. in Columbus, Ohio. This would become the first and only Brew-on-Premises facility in Central Ohio. The niche they found in the beer market would allow them to grow and expand, with the opening of their production and canning facility at 1125 Cleveland Avenue in 2014. With this growth, they realized there would be the need to add in-depth brewing knowledge and turned to a brewmaster and friend, Jason McKibben, for his expertise, experience and excellent sense of market acumen. Now employing nearly 20 full-time employees that includes sales associates and brewers, North High prides itself on offering small, unique batches of craft brews that spark interest and intrigue. They are also committed to the Brew-on-Premises concept allowing customers to experiment with flavors and varieties on a larger scale than home brewing allows. This combination of offerings allows them to keep an edge on the multitude of craft brewers invading the local market space and provides insight to future customer preferences.

During their expansion phase, the trio met Kelly Law, Commercial Relationship Manager at Heartland Bank’s Gahanna branch.  “North High Brewing came to us just over four years ago with plans to expand the brewery. They were a start-up business, born from an idea in their Ohio State University MBA program and were looking for a bank that would work with them to expand. The initial meeting has expanded into a full relationship where not only the business, but also the owners have looked to Heartland for their personal financing needs. We have been able to help them increase their brewing and canning capacity and expand their distribution throughout the state of Ohio. I look forward to a long and lasting relationship with North High and their staff.”

Life is their current feature beer and it’s no surprise that it splashes on the scene as the summer season closes, and the remainder of outdoor life in the Midwest is celebrated with the fall season, culminating in the eventual hibernation-phase of the year. This American made sparkling ale is light and bubbly with a blend of champagne yeast - life represented by a beer!

As the trio that founded North High reminisces on the journey of the past 7 years, it is evident that Life represents much more than their latest feature. It represents their devotion to the business, their struggle to keep ahead in an overly-competitive market, and their desire to make a dream come true - for their employees and themselves as they attempt to make their mark on Columbus and fulfill their entrepreneurial passion.
