Heartland Bank values tradition – boasting whenever possible about the founding members and their determination to form the Croton Bank Company (later renamed Heartland Bank) in a small farming community in Central Ohio to serve a valued segment of the workforce. Heartland’s story starts in the fields of Licking County and continues with a Vice President and Manager of Agribusiness Banking, Joel Oney, plowing ahead and leading his team to counties throughout Central Ohio and beyond.
Joel has dirt in his veins and banking in his brain. Born and raised on a dairy farm in northern Ohio where his family milks more than 500 dairy cows today, he has over 20 years of agricultural finance and leadership experience with Ohio and Kentucky farmers. He received his bachelor’s degree in Dairy Science from The Ohio State University and his master’s degree in Animal Nutrition from the University of Kentucky.
“I volunteer my time for FFA and 4H programs. I serve as a judge for various contests and I am a board member for the 4H Foundation. These youth programs had a positive impact on my life. It’s my turn to give back,” shares Joel as he modestly admits to a career devoted to serving the farming community that has become his livelihood. Starting as the Manager of Agribusiness Banking at Heartland in late 2014, Joel has built a great team of Agribusiness professionals – exceptional people produce successful results. “Currently managing $125 million of Agribusiness assets, I see no reason why that can’t be $500 million. To do so, we will need to continue to recruit high quality team members,” states Joel with the confidence that his team can grow cohesively and organically.
When asked about his responsibilities at Heartland, Joel says, “I work with the Agribusiness Banking Team to bring Heartland Bank products to our farm clients. We help our farmers find financial success.” He very easily could have said that he leads the team, that he runs the show, that he is the boss, but he clearly said that he “works with the Agribusiness Banking Team.” Earning the Quality and Excellence pin in April of 2016, Joel also recognizes that his peers, and not just his team, are aware of his contributions to the success of the bank and his department.
Not only does Joel support team building activities, he values his family and leisure time as well. “I am helping my daughters find success in their lives too, and I have a goal to run another triathlon in 2019.” Joel has helped his daughters navigate the pressures of college, thrown an awesome wedding this year for one of them, continues to manage one of his family’s farming partnerships in Ohio and renovates historic homes and properties in his spare time. To say he’s busy is an understatement!
Joel is obviously a Heartland believer. “You are not just receiving banking services. You get knowledgeable, experienced professionals who bring value to the business relationship. It is an honor to work with so many fine people at Heartland Bank.” In addition, Heartland’s Ag roots are strong…we do have a plow in our lobby! Heartland’s Agribusiness segment has enjoyed a growth spurt over the past few years and with Joel in the lead, the future looks promising.
