Heartland Bank Supports OLAF’s 25th Anniversary Celebration

Wednesday, September 11, 2019/Categories: Customer Stories

Since 1994, the Ohio Legal Assistance Foundation (OLAF) has supported and funded civil legal aid and access to justice initiatives to help ensure fairness in the justice system for all Ohioans, regardless of income. For over 25 years, the Foundation has funded life-changing civil legal help for over four million Ohio children, seniors, veterans and domestic violence survivors.

OLAF funds Ohio’s legal aids through the IOLTA/IOTA program, a civil filing fee surcharge, and donations. OLAF administers the IOLTA/IOTA program. Heartland Bank is proud to be one of OLAF’s Prime Partners. These institutions offer premium interest rates on lawyer’s trust accounts (IOLTA accounts) and real estate trust accounts (IOTA accounts), thus increasing the dollars available to fund civil legal aid in Ohio. When attorneys deposit funds with a Prime Partner, they help to ensure that Ohioans struggling to make ends meet have access to civil legal services to resolve their legal challenges, to become and remain productive members of their communities.

At Heartland Bank, we realize that legal issues can be financial burdens and life-changing events. In a 2017 study, the Legal Services Corporation found that 71% of low-income households experienced a civil legal problem in the past year. In fact, the study found that one in four low-income households experienced more than six civil legal problems in the past year. When people struggle to remain stably employed, to take care of their families, and to contribute to their communities, it impacts all of us.

Community stewardship is an integral part of the Heartland tradition. Participation as a Prime Partner for OLAF is just one contribution that the bank can make to ultimately provide assistance for Ohioans. Heartland is also contributing as a “Gold” sponsor for their 25th Anniversary celebration at the National Veterans Memorial and Museum on September 19th from 5 – 7 p.m.  At this event, they are excited to welcome keynote speaker, basketball commentator and former Ohio State University three-year starter and Big 10 MVP, Clark Kellogg.
